Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), on Wednesday, announced its plans to further strengthen its quest for the top slot in the two-wheeler market with a Rs.1,100-crore investment programme under which it would set up a new factory in Gujarat.
Terming it as an ‘aggressive & ambitious’ roadmap strategy, the largest two-wheeler maker by volumes will establish its fourth India two-wheeler factory in Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The proposed new plant, which will produce more scooters, is expected to commence production by the second-half of 2015-16. It is expected to create jobs for about 3,000 people.
Takanobu Ito, President and CEO (Representative Director), Honda Motor Company, Japan, said the new factory was meant to meet the future demand. . With the proposed Gujarat facility, the total capacity of the company would touch 5.8 million units by 2015-16.
The company already has facilities in Haryana, Rajasthan and Karnataka. Its total two-wheeler capacity is expected to reach 4.6 million units by the end of March. The two-wheeler market leader Hero’s total capacity is expected to touch 7.65 million units by the end of this fiscal.
Armed with strong local R & D from the technical centre, aggressive capacity expansion and ramp up of touch-points, HMSI hopes to deliver advance products in quick intervals.
The company will also further strengthen its offerings in the domestic market with two new products — all new Activa 25 and CBR 650F.
