Celkon launches first made in Telangana Tab

The Celkon Tab will be sold at an affordable price at Rs. 4,999. The low pricing was made possible by customs duty and VAT subsidies provided by the Union Government and State Government respectively.

Celkon mobiles launched the first made in Telangana tablet here on Tuesday. The seven-inch tab, CT722 supported by Intel chipset with 1.2 GHz quad core processor is also enabled with 1 GB RAM and 8GB ROM. The tab was manufactured at the company’s Medchal unit.

The Tab will be sold at an affordable price at Rs. 4,999. The low pricing was made possible by customs duty and VAT subsidies provided by the Union Government and State Government respectively. The Tab is retailed online through Snapdeal.

The company, by the year end will also get into manufacturing of 4G-enabled devices at its Medchal unit, company heads announced. Celkon will invest about Rs.250 crore into manufacturing electronic appliances including Televisions at its Tirupati and Hyderabad units, Mr. Y. Guru, chairman and managing director of Celkon mobiles said on the sidelines of the launch.

The company will get into manufacturing televisions by June, 2016. The company will take design aid from a Chinese manufacturing company through a joint venture, Mr. Guru said. Minister for IT, K. T. Ramarao launched the tab in the city.

The company is also planning to export its products on a large scale by 2018. “The company has sold units to 12 countries globally. We are expecting to expand exports in the near future,” Mr. Guru said. The Celkon also plans to set up a Research and Development unit near its Medchal facility.

Meanwhile, Snapdeal that is selling the tablet online will soon get into online car sales. “Currently we are doing that with bikes of the Hero range among others. We already have a tie up with Mahindra and will rope in other companies to join the online sale venture,” said Karan Khara, Vice President, Strategic Alliance, Snapdeal.. While the automobiles are booked and sold online, Snapdeal delivers the units through dealers with whom the company has tie-ups.

The company, however, does not have any plans to own fulfilment centres. “Our model has been to work in partnerships with existing fulfilment units and we will continue with that model,” Mr. Khara said.
