Norwegian telecom major Uninor has asked its customers in Kolkata and West Bengal to exhaust their balance by January 18 and port out using the number portability facility, as the company would have to stop its services in these two circles on January 19, 2013.
The decision was taken following the apex court quashing Uninor’s licenses and also due to non-availability of new spectrum.
Operations in the Mumbai circle are continuing as the Telenor Group evaluates the possibility of participating in the second auction, the company said.
Telenor Group had secured fresh licenses and spectrum for the next 20 years in the six circles of UP East, UP West, Bihar (including Jharkhand), Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra (including Goa) through its new company. “License cancellation and no new spectrum likely to be available through auctions in 2013 means we will discontinue operations in Kolkata and West Bengal,” said Sigve Brekke, Managing Director of Uninor.
