Samsung India Electronics Private Limited, a subsidiary of Korean electronics major Samsung, is planning to set up a manufacturing facility for home appliances adjacent to its existing facility at Sriperumbudur, near here. The company is planning to invest around $70 million over the next two years. So far the company had invested $30 million in the Chennai plant.

To a group of journalists who visited the Samsung facility at Sriperumbudur, Ruchika Batra, spokesperson for Samsung India Electronics, said that the company had two facilities in India — Noida and Chennai. Since the Noida facility was saturated, all future expansions would happen only at the Sriperumbudur facility.

At present, the Sriperumbudur facility produces LCD televisions, colour monitors, CTVs and front loading washing machines.

The next phase of investment plan would be to set up manufacturing facility for home appliances — refrigerators and air conditioners — at Sriperumbudur.

The facility would also start exporting home appliances.

The company’s exports stood at around Rs. 530 crore last year. These were expected to touch Rs. 1,000 crore this year. Of this, a major junk came from the Noida facility. “Going forward, we would like to make Sriperumbudur a hub for exports,” she added.

The company has 80 acres of land at Sriperumbudur. Out of which 23 acres had already been used to set up a facility to produce LCD televisions (six lakh capacity per annum), colour monitors (seven lakh), CTVs (1.5 million) and front loading washing machines (50,000 sets). The company was hoping to produce one million LCD television sets this year here, she added.

The production capacity at Nodia facility included CTVs 1.5 million sets, LCDs four lakh sets, washing machines six lakh sets, refrigerators 1.4 million sets and mobile handsets 10 million per annum.

Ms. Batra said the company had committed investment of $100 million between 2007 and 2012 at Sriperumbudur of which $30 million had been invested. The facility created 320 direct jobs and 450 indirect ones.

On company’s business target for the current year, Ms. Batra said, “We would close the current year with a turnover of $2 billion compared to $1.7 billion last year, an increase of 17 per cent”. The company, she said, was hoping to rake in sales of Rs. 1,700 crore, during the current festival season.

Ms. Batra said that the Southern market contributed 33 per cent of the overall sales. The company has over 10,000 dealers and around 300 exclusive show rooms across the country.
