SAIL chief seeks to hasten IISCO update

September 08, 2012 10:02 pm | Updated 10:02 pm IST - KOLKATA:

The Chairman of Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), C. S. Verma, has sought an early commissioning of the IISCO modernisation project, which is running over 12 months behind schedule.

Talking to the project managers, after a visit to IISCO, he said “.... we need to accelerate our pace for early commissioning..” The project has already missed several deadlines since 2011 and is now targeting a full commissioning by March 2013. A SAIL release said that while most of the main projects at Burnpur (where the project is located) were ready for commissioning, the remaining were in an advanced stage.

Revised cost

The delay has been attributed to difficult and unforeseen soil conditions. Land acquisition problems had also delayed the project whose revised cost now stands at around Rs.16,408 crore against the Rs.14,443 crore budgeted earlier.
