Hyundai Motor India will invest $300 million to set up a flexible engine plant and a new press shop at its existing factory in Irungattukkottai, near here.
“This investment will help us meet the growing demand for diesel vehicles in India and reduce the waiting period,” HMIL Managing Director Bo Shin Seo said in a release.
This would be in addition to the ongoing investments in new models, the release added.
Strike continues
Meanwhile, the strike by a section of the employees at the factory continued on Thursday. The management, however, maintained that despite 180 workers abstaining from work, since Tuesday, production at its two plants was on schedule.
“We are continuing with our strike,” Hyundai Motor India Employees Union general secretary R.Sridhar said. He said the Union president and MLA A.Soundararajan had met Tamil Nadu Labour Minister seeking the State government’s intervention.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd said the number of cars produced was 2,054 on Tuesday and 2,157 on Wednesday.
“Today, the company will produce 2,176 cars,” said a statement issued by the company on Thursday afternoon.
The company, it said, had already recognised UUHE (United Union of Hyundai Employees) as the official union that had a membership of over 1,300 permanent workers of the total 2007 permanent workers.
A wage agreemsent was signed with UUHE on October 18. Further, 400 employees who are not part of UUHE had signed and accepted the wage settlement, the statement said.
