Expect 5 p.c. of global sales in 3 yrs from India: Nikon

Nikon on Thursday launched a new digital SLR camera, aimed at further consolidating its share in the professional camera market. The Japanese imaging technology major also said it had reduced prices of its range of cameras to accelerate sales during the forthcoming festive season.

Priced at Rs.27,250 (body only) and Rs.32,950 (kit with 18-55mm VR lens), ‘D3100' will be Nikon entry-level D-SLR camera superseding D3000. The camera is equipped with a new CMOS image sensor developed by Nikon and a new image-processing engine that enable capture high-definition images exhibiting superior image quality.

“The new camera is the lightest and smallest among Nikon D-SLR collections. It offers high-quality image to users with its advanced ‘new guide' mode helping achieve the desired results. We are certain a new entry-level camera will supplement Nikon's bouquet of offerings,” Nikon India Managing Director Hiroshi Takashina told journalists here. Nikon currently enjoys 55 per cent market share in D-SLR category.

Mr. Takashina also said Nikon expected its Indian operations to account for 5 per cent of its global sales in the next three years from around one per cent now. “We are aiming at 30-40 per cent jump in our sales in the ensuing festive season. We are giving away offers and have reduced prices this month for our compact cameras. The next two months are crucial for us,” he added.
