Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has bagged a major order for setting up the 1,980 MW (3 X 660) Prayagraj Thermal Power Project (TPP) with Supercritical parameters in Uttar Pradesh.

The Rs.5,600 Crore order for the greenfield power project at Bara in Allahabad district placed by Prayagraj Power Generation Company Limited (PPGCL), owned by Jaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL), reflects customer confidence in BHEL’s technological excellence and capability, according to a press release. JAL, a unit of the Jaiprakash Group, bagged this project from the UP Govt. under tariff-based bidding, and went on to acquire PPGCL, the company formed by the UP Govt. for the purpose.

The order, a testimony to the confidence reposed by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in BHEL’s capabilities, reinforced its leadership status in the execution of thermal power projects involving supply of state-of-the-art equipment, suited to Indian coal and Indian conditions, the release said.

BHEL’s scope of work envisages design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of Steam Turbines, Generators and Boilers, along with associated Auxiliaries, besides state-of-the-art Controls & Instrumentation (C&I). Supercritical technology ensures lower coal consumption, minimum emission, and eco-friendly and efficient power generation. BHEL has been promoting joint venture companies to build, own and operate supercritical thermal power plants in association with state utilities like TNEB, KPCL and Mahagenco.

BHEL has upgraded its technology base from sub-critical sets to supercritical sets of 660/800MW and above. The company has ongoing collaboration agreements with Alstom, France and Siemens, Germany, with a technology transfer arrangement. This will enable the country to be self-reliant in the field of supercritical thermal power plants, it said.

BHEL has reaffirmed its commitment to the Indian Power Sector by equipping itself for the future, by way of technology, facilities and trained manpower to meet the country’s power forecast for the 11th Plan and beyond. For this, it has already enhanced its manufacturing capacity to 10,000 MW per annum and is further augmenting it to 15,000MW per annum which is proceeding apace and plans are afoot to hike it further to 20,000 MW by 2011-12., the release said.
