Breaking the language barrier the Idea way

October 22, 2010 12:17 am | Updated 12:17 am IST - CHENNAI:

Telecom operator Idea has opened language support helpline for the benefit of mobile users travelling to a relatively unfamiliar city.

Introduced under Idea's Breaking the Language Barrier initiative, the helpline in 16 Indian languages are aimed at enabling a mobile user to communicate basic needs in a setting where he does not know the local language.

Idea has revamped its IVR-driven customer care to incorporate the language helpline service, which is available to mobile users across operators. A caller can navigate the menu to reach the language assistance service.

Teams well-versed in the language of the user's choice will offer real-time guidance on carrying out common conversation in a host of typical scenarios.

For instance, a Bengali-speaking person can strike basic conversation in Marathi with a vegetable vendor in Mumbai or seek directions in Tamil if he is in Chennai.

The caller needs to verbalise the message he seeks to convey and helpline agents will assist him to put it across.

The input to the helpline need be given in English or Hindi to get a translated version in the desired local language.

A call to the helpline will be charged at local call rates.
