India Yamaha Motor Private Ltd will produce one million vehicles by 2015, said Deputy Managing Director Riuji Kawashima.
Addressing members of the Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, he said the company produced 6.5 lakh vehicles in 2013 calendar year. The company would be reaching the one-million mark in production next year, he added.
Mr. Kawashima said “We will end calendar year 2014 with 7.50 lakh units. The domestic market would account for the major portion of sales.”
Talking to The Hindu , a company official said they exported two lakh units during 2013 and for the current year they would maintain the same. “Next year, we will produce one million units, of which 2.50 lakh units will be exported,” he added.
Yamaha has two production units. The new plant in Chennai is on course. But, the dates for inauguration had not been finalised, he said. Tamil Nadu served as a base to 523 Japanese firms, and the number would reach 1,000 in the next two years, said Tamil Nadu Industrial Guidance Bureau Executive Vice-Chairman M. Velmurugan. He also mentioned that Tamil Nadu was the single largest recipient of Japanese investment, and Chennai and Sriperumbudur were home to large number of Japanese firms.
Japanese Consul-General in Chennai Masanori Nakano said it was easy to achieve the targets set by the Prime Ministers of both nations with regard to doubling of trade and investment.
JETRO Chennai, Director-General Hidehiro Ishiura said majority of Japanese investments in India were in automobile and infrastructure sectors.
