Saint-Gobain of France on Monday inaugurated its Rs.1,000-crore ($185 million) glass manufacturing facility in Bhiwadi in Rajasthan.

The fully automated plant, having a capacity to manufacture close to 1,000 tonnes of glass a day, is the largest glass manufacturing facility for the firm in the world.

The company said the location of the new plant is strategic, and it will be able to service the entire North optimally from Bhiwadi. Further, being on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, it gives significant logistics advantages.

“I am happy to note that ‘Make in India’ is the new direction of the Indian government. As Saint-Gobain, we not only agree with this, but strongly support this initiative... about 90 per cent of the group’s sale in India is locally manufactured,” Pierre-Andre de Chalendar, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Saint-Gobain, said.

The plant is spread over 136 acres with a built-up area of 1.14 lakh sq. metre.

With this new plant, the total capacity of the company will go up to 3,000 tonnes a day. Besides this plant, Saint-Gobain has three manufacturing units in India — two in Chennai and one in Gujarat.

The $185 million facility will have a capacity of 1,000 tonnes of glass a day
