Three-wheeler manufacturer Piaggio Vehicles today re-entered the scooter segment by introducing its Vespa model at the 11th Auto Expo here.

“We would like to leverage this feasible un-tapped market segment that shows tremendous potential for the growth in the coming years,” Piaggio Vehicles CMD Ravi Chopra said.

Piaggio India has already set up a manufacturing facility at Baramati in Maharashtra for the production of the scooter with the initial capacity of 1,50,000 units.

“We will ramp up the capacity to 3,00,000 units as the demand increases,” Chpora added.

The scooter will be launched in the country in April 2012 and would be available in 35 cities across the country.

In September, Chopra had said that the company was looking to sell the scooter mainly in the domestic market.

Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd (PVPL), Indian arm of the Italian firm Piaggio, has 50 dealers for the sales.
