Marine exports hit record $5 b in last fiscal

Exports of marine products touched 9.84 lakh tonnes, valued at Rs.30,213.26 crore, in the last fiscal. This translates to $5 billion, which is an all-time record. Seafood exports grew 5.98 per cent in terms of quantity and 60.23 per cent in terms of rupee value over the previous year. The unit value also registered a record high growth of 34.55 per cent, touching $5.09 from $3.78 a kg in the previous fiscal. Announcing this at a press briefing here on Friday, Leena Nair, Chairperson of the Marine Products Export Development Authority , said frozen shrimp continued to be the major export value item, accounting for 64.12 per cent of the total dollar earnings.
