Cargill India expects to start production at its upcoming maize milling unit in Karnataka in June, 2015.
The Rs. 630-crore plant, its first maize (or corn) unit in the country, will process 800 tonnes of maize (corn) a day, sourced mostly from farmers of Harihar in Davanagere district and neighbouring places, according to Jan Bosman, Delhi-based Managing Director of Cargill Foods’s Starch and Sweeteners division.
The U.S.-based company, which had been present in Karnataka since 1983 as a seed supplier, is setting up the modern plant on 45 acres. Mr. Bosman told The Hindu over telephone that work on the plant had begun. The plant would hire about 350 engineers and skilled workers, he added. The plant would supply modified starch extracted from maize to India-based food and pharmaceutical industries for their bakery, confectionery, snacks, beverage, pharmaceutical and personal care products, Mr. Bosman said.
