The first unit of the 2 x 600 MW capacity coal-fired Kalisindh thermal power project of Rajasthan Rashtriya Utpadan Nigam Ltd. has gone on stream
Chennai-based BGR Energy Systems is the EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor for the project.
The total size of the 2 x 600 MW project is Rs.5,164 crore.
600 MW projects
With the commissioning of the Kalisindh unit, BGR Energy has now executed EPC contract for two 600 MW projects. Both are coal-fired. The 600 MW project for Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has already seen trial run, and gone commercial.
According A. Swaminathan, Director (Marketing), the Kalisindh unit has the tallest cooling tower in the world with an height of 202 metres. He expected the second unit at Kalisindh to go on stream in four months.
According to G. Amudhan, President (Projects), the company has faced challenge in the form of ash disposal while executing the project for TANGEDCO at Mettur in view of the land constraint.
“We have to go in for dry bottom-ash handling systems. Handling the disposal of 85 tonnes of dry bottom-ash is a huge task,’’ he said. The dry ash handing system at Mettur is the world’s largest, he claimed.
The experience in executing the two ECP jobs for 600 MW projects has now emboldened BGR Energy to scout for offshore projects.
“We feel that we are now mature enough for projects outside India,’’ explained Mr. Swaminathan. The company is already in parleys with a few Chinese companies and Hitachi to bid for coal and gas-based power projects in markets such as the Gulf and Southeast Asia. BGR Energy has a couple of joint ventures with Hitachi for making boilers and turbines.
Swarnamugi Karthik, Director (Corporate Strategy), who is also the daughter of the founder late B.G. Raghupathy, felt the management team was well-experienced to take the company forward.
