Personal impact
I was very impressed and moved by Arundhathi Subramaniam's review of Jerry Pinto's book ( Literary Review , May 6). You need something extra, apart from sensitivity and insight, to make such an impact. My mother suffered from Alzheimer's for eight years before her death. So I know exactly what Arundhathi and Pinto are referring to.

Kudos Chennai
With reference to the article “Where it all began” by Mohan V. Raman ( Magazine, May 13), Chennai remained as a citadel of all South Indian films till the 1990s; some producers from Mumbai preferred the studios at Kodambakkam for their wonderful infrastructure and work culture prevailing there. Kodambakkam was once considered as the biggest film production centre in South East Asia owing to the location of more than 20 studios, infrastructure and availability of talent.

Care for heritage
The article “Rendezvous@Raffles” by S. Muthiah ( Magazine , May 13) on Singapore turning its old hotel Raffles into a national monument speaks volumes. We have scores of heritage buildings and monuments, but their condition presents a dismal picture, reflecting our failure to recognise historical worth.

Mindset makeover
This is with reference to the article by Kalpana Sharma ( Magazine , May 13). Today, full time domestic help is hard to find. Agencies rule the roost. They lay down impossible conditions for the service. Helpless households, where old people live alone, face the brunt. Labour laws, if made applicable to the tribe, would bring in more harm than succour.
