The Thuppakki story

Veteran director and producer S. A. Chandrashekar, who is also the father of actor Vijay, made the audio launch of his son’s upcoming film Thuppakki an interesting affair by disclosing details of why he, after deciding to produce the film, chose to opt out and let Dhanu produce it.

“When I approached my son for this project, he insisted I should rope in the best of professionals — a successful director, cameraman and co-star. So I approached A. R. Murugadoss who demanded a huge sum as remuneration. I was dumbstruck initially, but realised going by his track record of hit films, every penny I invest would be worth it. And Murugadoss finally came on board. Once the shooting began I became tensed about handling it all. So I told Vijay I wish to give it over to Dhanu.”

Family affair

Director, producer and actor Sundar C has great regard for lyricist Vairamuthu because he encourages youngsters and newcomers.

“When I was making my first film, I approached Vairamuthu sir for the songs. At that point, he had also been approached by two established directors . All three films were being shot simultaneously and Vairamuthu sir who happened to visit the sets called me to his car and asked me what my requirements were. I asked him, why he had chosen to take up my film first,to which he replied, ‘They have all succeeded in life. You are the one who has to grow and therefore have a greater need for my support.’ That support continues to this day.”

Making a comeback

Director RK Selvamani who has hits such as Pulan Visaranai and Chembaruthi to his credit is all set to make a comeback. The director is now making a film titled Akila, which is expected to hit theatres in November. The director has also acted in the film and plays a terrorist. P. Anandhan, Aarthi, Narein, Heethasha and Baby Yuktha also star in the film that revolves around terrorism and its impact.
