Myriad hues of dragon-headed veena

The number of Nuzvid Veena makers has fallen from 20 in 2011 to nine in 2014. Sheik Meera Saheb, one of the first-generation Nuzvid Veena makers, has quit the art owing to poor health condition. Inheriting the legacy of making lion-headed Veena, Meera Saheb’s younger son Sheik Mabu Saheb takes it forward to its newer heights. The Veena made of jackfruit tree wood has a great demand both in India and some foreign countries. Of late, lack of availability of wood has been threatening the once flourishing rural industry in Krishna District. Carnatic vocalist Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna team to V.L. Narayana of Tamil Nadu and many other Veena artists prefer the exquisite art work from Nuzvid. Text and photos by T. Appala Naidu. »
