Asiad, Day 15 - As it happened

November 27, 2010 07:14 am | Updated November 17, 2021 05:29 am IST

Right. That just about wraps up all the action from the 16th Asian Games - at least as far as the on-field action is concerned. There is still the Closing Ceremony to look forward to. Anand Venkateswaran will be furiously tapping his fingers on the keyboard for that one from around 17:10 IST. Do join us then (and keep your comments pouring in). But do stay on because all the news reports vis-a-vis the Asiad will keep getting updated on our website.

13:43 China have beat South Korea in the women's volleyball to take the final gold of the 16th Asian Games. Fittingly, one might add, because while the other nations did contribute to the medals tally... it was China who dominated it from start to finish. South Korea might feel disappointed to have lost out because they were leading the match 2-0 but as a testament to China's never-say-die attitude, they came back from the brink to close out the set and the match.

13:19 China have taken the fourth set 25-17. China to open serve in the deciding fifth set.

13:12 Just stood up to clearly see a fifth set in the horizon. China do have the momentum and lead by a handy margin of five points (20-15) in the fourth.

12:55 China have indeed taken the game into the fourth set. South Korea have a very slender 3-2 advantage in the fourth stanza.

12:47 Two sets to nil down, China seem to have come into the game at last. Leading 19-9 in the third, this volleyball final might as well go into a fourth set.

12:34 South Korea have taken the second set against China 25-22 in the women's volleyball final.

12:29 Ram Yadav Singh of India looks to have come home in 15th place in the men's marathon with a time of 2 hours and 39 minutes.

China, earlier today, were going for that an incredible milestone of 200 gold medals. But that little mark cannot be reached now as they did not secure the gold in the men's marathon. Hopes of winning one more gold in the women's volleyball also appear to be thinning as South Korea lead in the second set 17-14.

12:10 Thailand have beaten Japan by three sets to one in the women's placement (5th-6th) match in volleyball. In the marquee volleyball event of the day - women's gold medal match - South Korea have taken the first set 25-21 against China.

11:47 More drama. Japan's Yukihiro Kitaoka pips Qatar's Shami to the silver. Shami, the defending champion, settles for the bronze.

11:46 A phenomenal achievement by South Korea's Youngjun Ji as he takes the gold in the men's marathon with a time of about 2.10.10. An Asian born athlete winning the men's marathon. Sensational.

11:41 South Korea's Youngjun has taken off after the two hour mark in the men's marathon. Qater's Shami is nowhere in the vicinity. It has been a tremendous run so far by the South Korean.

Meanwhile, Thailand have taken the third set in the women's placement match and action has just about started in the women's gold medal match between South Korea and China.

11:21 Bit of a needle starting to develop between Shami and the South Korea Youngjun Ji, the second-placed man. Could be a humdinger of a last few kms if one can match the pace of the other.

11:18 Oh dear. Salem just sits on the tarmac all of a sudden. Salem, a compatriot of Shami, did lead the early part of the race. His pace was fading over the course of the last hour. It is just a pity that he has go bow out in this way. There might as well be some damage to him as replays showed him touching and feeling his hamstring.

11:12 The defending champion Shami leads a group of four in the men's marathon. Japan, South Korea and China are the occupy the other places in the top four. About one hour and 35 minutes into the race.

11:00 Japan have levelled proceedings in the women's volleyball placement match.

Harish Kumar wants to know whether there is any Indian interest today.

Like I said earlier, there is Ram Singh Yadav currently competing in the men's marathon. Apart from that, there is not any Indian participation.

10:36 Just passed the one hour mark in the men's marathon. There are still about seven to eight runners in the lead pack.

10:26 Thailand have taken the first set 25-12 against Japan in a women's placement (5th-6th) match in Volleyball. The next match at the volleyball court is the gold medal match between South Korea and China.

10:13 Kamal and Hassan are still the leaders in the men's marathon. The usual suspects - Chinese - are hanging in there. India's Ram Singh Yadav is currently in 12th place.

09:47 Kamal Belal Salem and Mubarak Hassan Shami are currently leading the men's marathon. Just about 13 minutes into the race. Very early doors in the event.

Myanmar have completed a golden double in the Sepaktakraw. After the men won the gold in the men's double, the woman have repeated the feat by beating China 2-1.

09:38 The men's marathon has begun.

AP has this brief report on the men's Sepaktakraw gold won by Myanmar

Myanmar has won its first gold medal at the Asian Games, defeating South Korea 2-0 in the men’s doubles sepaktakraw final.

Myanmar pair Si Thu Lin and Zaw Zaw Aung - helped by spiker Zaw Lat in the second set - won the 51-minute final 21-18, 21-18 on Saturday, the last day of competition.

Lee Gyu-nam injured his elbow in the second set at 17-17 when he landed heavily while going for an acrobatic spike.

He opted to continue but the South Korean pair could save only one match point before losing the gold meld match.

It was Myanmar’s second ever sepak takraw gold at Asian Games. They won their first gold in 1998 at Bangkok in the women’s Regu.

09:17 China have taken the second set in the women's double final in Sepaktakraw 14-21. Myanmar took the first set 21-15. Into the third and deciding set.

09:07 Kazakhstan beats North Korea 3-0 to take the bronze in the women's volleball.

09:05 Chinese Taipei beats Mongolia 3-0 in a women's volleyball placement (7th-8th) match.

You must be very serious in all the Sepaktakraw and Volleyball action. Have anything to say on anything vis-vis the Asian Games? liveresponse@thehindu.co.in.

08:52 Myanmar are leading 1-0 against China in the women's double final in the Sepaktakraw.

China, in fact, complete a one-two thanks to Xiaolin Zhu. North Korea's Kum Ok Kim takes the bronze.

08:26 Chunxiu Zhou takes the gold in the women's marathon in just a shade under 2 hours and 25 mionutes. Magnificient run.

08:20 Xiaolin Zhu of China and Kum Ok Kim of North Korea are currently in second and third respectively. The leading women have just passed the 40 kms mark. Just about 2 kms to go before the finish line.

08:15 China, through Chunxiu Zhou, are currently leading the women's marathon.

08:10 Kazakhstan have tightened their lead in the bronze medal game. Having won the first set, they lead second 16-7.

07:55 Kazakhstan have taken the first set 25-21 against North Korea in the women's bronze medal match in volleyball.

07:40 North Korea and Indonesia lead the women's marathon but China are sitting pretty in third as well as fourth place. Waiting for the moment, I had say.

07:30 Myanmar have won the gold in the men's double final in Sepaktakraw after beating South Korea 2-0.

Just to make myself clear. There are no Indian women in the woman's marathon.

In the men's section, Ram Singh Yadav will be featured.

Myanmar are currently leading South Korea 1-0 in men's double final in Sepaktakraw. What else has been happening/in store today?

The women's marathon is almost in the half-way stage. The men's marathon is scheduled to start at about 09:30 IST.

The women's volleyball final and the bronze medal match is also scheduled to be held today.

Some more gold medals to be decided on the last day of the Games.

The curtains are coming down on what has been an outstanding Asian Games. The Opening Ceremony set the tone. The action on the field has lived up to expectations.

Hopefully, I don't get myself into more Malaysia and Iran confusions. Sorry and my aplogies to all the readers who got frustrated by that.
