The communal >violence in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, which has claimed three lives, should serve as an eye-opener to the State government. It should realise that vested interests will forever seek to keep the communal cauldron alive. The Samajwadi Party government should remember what price it had to pay in the Lok Sabha elections due to its ineffective response to the Muzaffarnagar riots. The recent violence in the western U.P. city highlights the imminent need for continued vigilance against communal elements. Eternal vigilance is the price of peace in this communally sensitive State.

Communal violence and violence against women in Uttar Pradesh should be understood in the context of economic stagnation in the State. Bihar faced a similar situation at one time, but thanks to the Nitish Kumar government’s socio-economic policies, the situation in the State has improved. The Akhilesh Yadav government should announce massive employment projects, women empowerment policies and security measures in order to restore order in the State.
