There has been a spike again in >acid-throwing attacks on women across the country, the latest incident being the one involving two college girls in Tirumangalam in Tamil Nadu (Sept. 14). While the victim, who is psychologically traumatised, has to deal with the scars left by the attack, her family has to struggle to bear the cost of expensive reconstructive surgery and post-operative costs. The perpetrator, on the other hand, exploits the loopholes in the law while the victim is made to run from pillar to post to get justice, which is often delayed. Acid attacks must be dealt with separately with a law to fast-track swift and stringent punishment for the attacker.
