Dowry case against Goa BJP leader: show cause notice to policewoman

Panaji: Judicial Magistrate First Class Vijayalaxmi Shivolkar on Saturday ordered that a show cause notice be issued to sub-inspector Sandhya Gupta with Panaji women police station for not complying with the undertaking given to the court that Goa BJP vice-president Anil Hoble will be charge-sheeted in two days.

A case was registered against Mr. Hoble, also the chairman of the OBC Corporation, for allegedly assaulting his daughter-in-law and harassing her parents with dowry demands.

The directions came after the victim’s lawyer said that Ms. Gupta had on October 7 made a statement before the court that a charge sheet against Mr. Hoble would be filed within two days.

Pointing out that it has been almost a month, advocate Aires Rodrigues submitted that Ms. Gupta is in clear contempt of court.

Justice Shivolkar adjourned to November 18 the petition filed by Suchitra Shirodkar, mother of the victim, who has sought directions to the police to properly investigate the case as the accused is politically influential.

Acting on a complaint filed by Ms. Shirodkar, the Panaji women police on July 12 had booked Mr. Hoble, his wife Sandhya, and son Milind under Sections 498-A, 323, and 506(ii) read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code, and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prevention Act.
