ED seizes imported watches from Nirav Modi's company
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday froze bank accounts with ₹30 crore and shares worth ₹13.86 crore held by a company of Nirav Modi.
During a search based on a tip-off, the ED seized 176 steel almirahs, 158 boxes and 60 plastic containers containing imported watches.
TAPI pipeline breaks ground in Afghanistan
Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India on Friday ceremonially broke ground on the Afghan section of an ambitious, multi-billion dollar gas pipeline expected to help ease energy deficits in South Asia.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov joined Pakistani premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and India’s External Affairs Minister M.J. Akbar for the ceremony at gas-rich Turkmenistan’s border with Afghanistan.
Trudeau meets Modi
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. He said that diversity opens societies to new ways of thinking and spurs innovation. In this regard, the Prime Minister cited Toronto in Canada and Bengaluru in India as examples of multi-cultural cities that are also hi-tech hubs. He also said Canada and India need to capitalise on people-to-people ties, and leverage business and knowledge networks.
Shots fired at N Korea embassy in Tokyo
Tokyo Police on Friday arrested two Japanese men believed to be right-wing activists for shooting at North Korea's de facto embassy in Tokyo. Police said that the men fired several shots at the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, a pro-Pyongyang group representing ethnic Koreans in Japan.
They said the men, aged 46 and 56, drove by in a vehicle and one of them fired several shots. The gate was damaged but nobody was injured. Their motive was not known. Patrolling police rushed to the closely monitored organization and arrested the man on the spot, confiscating a gun. Tokyo has no diplomatic ties with Pyongyang, but tens of thousands of pro-Pyongyang ethnic Koreans live in Japan and still have relatives in the North.
St. Antony’s church festival in Katchatheevu
Rameswaram–Verkodu Parish, organising pilgrimage for the annual St. Antony’s church festival in Katchatheevu on February 23 and 24, has finalised the list of pilgrims, restricting the number to 2,103.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday observed that fishermen can be permitted to travel in motorised country boats to Katchatheevu for the St. Antony’s Church festival, from the coming years, subject to rules and regulations. However, permission would not be granted this year, as the issue was brought to the knowledge of the court at short notice

The armed sheriff's deputy assigned to the Florida high school where 17 people were shot dead has resigned rather than face suspension after an internal investigation showed he failed to enter the school to confront the gunman during the attack, the county sheriff said.
