A warm gesture: Governor Banwarilal Purohit greeting Jeelan Begum Saheba, mother of Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali at the Amir Mahal on Saturday.

“All religious saints, seers, scholars and social thinkers have only spread the message of love and peace. May we resolve to practise love and promote unity and peace to build a harmonious world,” said Governor Banwarilal Purohit while addressing a gathering at the Meelad-un-Nabi programme held at Amir Mahal here on Saturday.

“On the joyous occasion of Meelad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Mohammed, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to all our Muslim brothers and sisters. It is a pleasure to visit Amir Mahal, the official residence of the Nawab of Arcot,” the Governor said.

He and his wife Pushpa Devi Purohit were received at the venue by Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, Prince of Arcot and his family.

The Governor, in his address, spoke about the various religions and cultures of the country.

“Our nation is home to many religions. All religions preach the goodness of truth and moral living, love and compassion. We should respect all religions, in the same manner, as we respect our own religion, since the underlying message of all religions is the same,” Mr. Purohit said.

The Nawab welcomed the gathering and recited verses from the holy Koran. “Islam preaches love, tolerance, non-violence and forgiveness like any other religion. I pray to the almighty to grant health, happiness and long life to us all,” he said.

N. Ram, Chairman of The Hindu Group of Publications; N. Ravi, publisher of The Hindu ; and A.K. Viswanathan, Commissioner of Police, Chennai, were present.
