Vijayakant’s funeral updates | Vijayakant laid to rest with state honours

Actor-turned-politician buried with a 72-round gun salute at the party headquarters. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin represents the State govt., along with many of his Cabinet colleagues. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and film stars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan also pay their respects

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder Vijayakant was laid to rest with full state honours at the party headquarters in Chennai’s Koyambedu on December 29. Mr. Vijayakant died at a private hospital in Chennai on December 28 morning. 

The actor-turned-politician, who was the Leader of the Opposition between 2011 and 2016, was buried after being placed in a sandalwood coffin at the DMDK headquarters with a 72-round gun salute.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin represented the State government along with many of his Cabinet colleagues. AIADMK leader D. Jayakumar, BJP leader Pon. Radhakrishnan, former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and Tamil Maanila Congress leader G.K. Vasan were among the political leaders who participated in the ceremony. 

The body of the DMDK leader, which was kept at the Island Grounds for the public to pay their respects, was taken in hearse to the party headquarters. Only 200 persons were allowed inside the premises for the ceremony. Heavy security arrangements were in place for the funeral.

The funeral procession, which was to start by 1 p.m., finally left Island Grounds only at around 3 p.m due to large crowds visiting the venue to pay their respects to the “Captain”. As the hearse reached the burial site, crowds burst crackers and raised slogans to bid adieu to their leader. Read more

    Vijayakant laid to rest

    Vijayakant was laid to rest with full state honours after tens of thousands of people paid their last respects.

    After Vijayakant’s family members performed the last rites, the coffin, made of sandalwood was buried in the designated space amid chants of ‘captain’ and ‘veera vanakkam’ (valourous salute).

    The words ‘Puratchi Kalaignar (revolutionary artist) Captain Vijayakant’ was embossed on the coffin.

    While only a limited number of people were allowed inside the space earmarked for burial, countless men who gathered outside shone torches on their mobile phones as a mark of respect.

    Vijayakant’s wife Premalatha, his sons Vijaya Prabhakaran and Shanmuga Pandian were consoled by the leaders.

    Stalin removed his shoes before entering the space earmarked for state honours and conduct of last rites, and laid a wreath accompanied by senior DMK leaders like T R Baalu and Ministers including K N Nehru, Ma Subramanian and Udhayanidhi Stalin.

    In a mark of respect to the departed leader, the Chief Minister touched twice the wreath he placed in front of the coffin.

    Actor-politician Vijayakant’s last rites to be performed December 29

    Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder-leader and actor Vijayakant, passed away in Chennai, aged 71, after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. 

    His mortal remains are to be taken from the Koyambedu office to Island ground, Anna Salai for public homage. 

    From 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, Vijayakant’s mortal remains will be kept there. Later by 1 p.m., the mortal remains will be taken to the Koyambedu office and the last rites will be held in the Koyambedu DMDK office by 4.45 p.m.
