Reports of a marginal improvement in the health of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M. Karunanidhi have brought a measure of relief to his admirers in Tiruvarur, who voted for him as their representative in the Assembly in 2016.
Nevertheless, people from different faiths continue to seek divine intervention for his speedy recovery.
A group of people held a special prayer service at the St. Fathima Church here on Sunday. More than 500 persons, including DMK functionaries, participated in the service held between 8.30 a.m. and 10 a.m.
After reading passages that pertain to sick patients, Reverend Father D. Ulaganathan asked members of the congregation to pray for Mr. Karunanidhi. The participants prayed holding candles.
‘Healing touch’
“Mr. Karunanidhi is our representative. The reports of his poor health are disturbing us. We are eager to see him visit the constituency again to serve the people as usual. We hope the prayer will keep him in good health,” Fr. Ulaganathan told The Hindu .
Sebas Rolin, a follower of Mr. Karunanidhi, said the former Chief Minister had brought laurels to Tiruvarur, where he had spent his student days. The prayer would have a healing touch on him, he hoped. “Despite advanced age and deteriorating health, our leader visited every nook and corner of Tiruvarur in 2016 and met the voters to express his gratitude for electing him to the State Assembly. It still lingers in our mind. We’d like to see him on the streets of Tiruvarur again,” said Rajini Chinna, a DMK youth wing functionary.
