Protest in Kodaikanal

March 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - KODAIKANAL:

Former workers of a thermometer factory staged a demonstration on KCF Grounds here on Friday demanding compensation to those persons whose health had been affected because of mercury waste.

The agitators said that the company had assured to give compensation to the affected workers but did not do so.

The workers also met the company’s top officials in Chennai in this connection. But nothing had been done so far, they said.

Removing the rest of the waste from the factory in Kodaikanal and boycotting Hindustan Unilever products were their other demands. The workers also sent messages to the London office through mail.

Earlier, they took out a rally that started at Kodaikanal Government Hospital and ended at KCF Grounds after passing through prime roads.

The company lifted 289 tonnes of waste from the Kodaikanal factory in 2003.
