Perarivalan back in Vellore prison

Forty-three-year-old Perarivalan has been incarcerated in the Central Prison here along with Murugan and Santhan ever since January 28, 1998.

A.G. Perarivalan, one of the four life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, returned to Central Prison for Men, Vellore, on Friday after undergoing medical treatment.

He was taken to the Central Prison in Puzhal, Chennai on June 7 to provide treatment for urinary tract infection at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai.

In prison since 1998

Forty-three-year-old Perarivalan has been incarcerated in the Central Prison here along with Murugan and Santhan ever since January 28, 1998, when the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities Act Court, Poonamallee, handed out death sentence to them for the assassination which took place on May 21, 1991.

Nalini, the only woman accused to be sentenced to death, is lodged in the Special Prison for Women, Vellore.

Following a mercy petition submitted by her, her death sentence was commuted to life by then Tamil Nadu Governor Fatima Beevi in April 2000, while the death sentences of Perarivalan, Murugan and Santhan were commuted to life by the Supreme Court on February 18, 2014 on the grounds of the inordinate delay in the disposal of their mercy petitions to the President.
