Kanyakumari district witnesses sea of first-time voters

Pon. Radhakrishnan, N. Thalavai Sundaram and N. Suresh Rajan among early voters; Colachel AIADMK candidate’s vehicle seized for violating election rules.

Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan voted at a booth in Duthie Girls Higher Secondary School in Nagercoil constituency on Monday.

Former Minister N. Thalavai Sundaram and Kanyakumari AIADMK candidate voted at the Government Higher School in Thovalai, while N. Suresh Rajan and Nagercoil DMK candidate exercised his franchise at the Duthie Girls Higher Secondary School.

Sitting Nagercoil MLA and AIADMK candidate A. Nanjil Murugesan polled at the S.R.V. Higher Secondary School.

Sea of first time voters could be seen standing in queue or returning after exercising their democratic duty for the first time in several booths across the district.

D. Vijitha of Saralur, a first time voter exercised her vote for the first time enthusiastically at Booth No. 215 in Nagercoil segment at the S.T. Hindu College. She said she is proud to participate in the democratic process to elect a representative for the first time and said that nobody encouraged or pressing her to vote.

Another voter, T. Sathy Leela, educated up to standard VIII, who also a first time voter said that she was proud to participate in the democratic exercise.

Among them were seasoned voters like G. Gomathi, 78, of Thattanvilai, who voted enthusiastically at a booth in S.T. Hindu College.

Polling went off peacefully at sensitive booths 236 and 237 in Kanyakumari constituency.

A car of the former Minister and Colachel AIADMK candidate K.T. Pachaimal was seized for violating the election rules by the authorities. It was alleged that he had cross the 100-metre line from the polling booth.

A newly-wedded couple turned at the L.M.S. Government Middle School in Malapalai near Arumanai immediately after their marriage solemnized at a Church in Malacaud.

There were minor complaints of poor lighting at a Booth No. 40 in Ponmanai Town Panchayat Office. It was alleged that senior citizens find it difficult to exercise their franchise in Padmanabhapuram constituency.

Polling was affected for a brief period in Booth No. 186 at Mangarai in Killiyoor segment due to mal functioning of EVMs. Officials set right the machine and the poll went off peacefully.
