The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday sought a status report from the Director General of Police and Home Department to know if the State had constituted State-level and district-level police complaints authority to hear complaints against senior officials.

A Division Bench of Justices K. K. Sasidharan and G. R. Swaminathan said the report should be filed by December 10.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed in 2013 by G. Alex Benziger of Chennai seeking a direction to the State to constitute the committees in accordance with a 2007 Supreme Court direction.

SC’s directive

Apart from the police complaints authority, the apex court directed State governments to constitute the State Security Commission; formulate guidelines for selection and minimum tenure of DGPs and IGs; separate investigation from law and order police for speedier investigation and form Police Establishment Board to decide on transfers, postings and promotions. The court had also directed the Centre to establish a National Security Commission.
