‘BJP keen on welfare of fishermen’

April 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - NAGAPATTINAM:

The Bharatiya Janata Party is keen on ensuring the welfare of Indian fishermen as it is evident from the fact that all the fishermen and their boats detained by Sri Lanka were released after Narendra Modi assumed office as Prime Minister, said P. Muralidhar Rao, national general secretary of the BJP.

Addressing a public meeting at Vedaranyam on Tuesday night, he said that both the Congress and the DMK had remained mute spectators when hundreds of innocent fishermen were attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy in the past. But, the BJP, on coming to power, put pressure on the Sri Lankan government to ensure the safety of fishermen and the release of all the detained fishermen along with their boats.

Neglected

Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Pon. Radhakrishnan said that districts such as Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai were neglected in both the AIADMK and the DMK regimes in the past. Earlier former DMK MLA S.K. Vedarathinam along with his supporters joined the BJP.
