The Jan Chetna Yatra led by senior Bhartiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani is scheduled to reach Madurai en route to Kerala on October 27.
Muralidhara Rao, one of the general secretaries of the party, told reporters here on Thursday that this leg of the yatra would begin after a two-day break for Deepavali. Mr. Advani would address a public meeting at Madurai.
The next day he would proceed to Thiruvananthapuram via Srivilliputhur, Rajapalayam, Puliyangudi, Kadayanallur and Tenkasi.
In Tamil Nadu, the yatra would cover 13 Assembly segments in three districts.
To a question on the party's stand on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, Mr. Rao admitted that it had not taken a conclusive stand. “We are not totally opposed to such plants. But, our stand is that the apprehension of the people in the Kudankualam region is genuine and it is imperative for the government to allay their fears.”
He sought “re-evaluation” of the safety aspects of the plant. Any report in this regard should be made available to the public.
“There should be total transparency and the Central government should not approach this issue from a pre-determined position.”
He wanted the Kudankulam issue to be discussed in Parliament without treating it as a regional problem.
