The city municipal corporation has decided to increase the number of wards from the existing 60 to 72.
Deputy Mayor M. Natesan said that the population of many wards was over 25,000 while the population of few wards was 6,000.
Waste management
Since solid waste management work and allocation of funds were allotted on ward basis, many works could not be undertaken in wards where the population is higher.
Hence, he wanted wards to have balanced population so that developmental works reach all the residents.
He urged the corporation to take up the issue with the State government and increase the number of wards to 72.
Resolution
During the council meeting held on Tuesday, house whip E. Balasubramaniam read out an urgent resolution for increasing the wards. He said that wards 50, 9, 37, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 60 will be delimitated and new wards will be formed.
