Tension prevailed here for a while on Friday after an attempt was made on the life of a Bharatiya Janata Party functionary by an unidentified gang.

Police said P. Muthuraman, 45, a realtor from Velladichivilai and district head of the BJP’s traders’ wing, was going to Nagercoil on a two-wheeler. Three unidentified persons intercepted him and attacked him with sickles when he was crossing Lalavilai near Idalaakudi. He sustained cut injuries on the left hand and both the legs and was rushed to the hospital.

Cadre of the BJP and other Hindu outfits blocked traffic on Idalaakudi–Nagercoil road.

Minister for Shipping and Highways Pon. Radhakrishnan, who inspected the spot, called on Mr. Muthuraman at the hospital. Party cadre also blocked traffic in front of the hospital demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the attack.

Traffic on the Nagercoil – Kanyakumari road was affected. The windscreen of a mini-bus proceeding from Parakki to Nagercoil was damaged at Velladichivilai. Miscreants also pelted several houses in Azad Nagar with stones. Superintendent of Police N. Manivannan, who visited the spot, is spearheading the investigation.
