An elderly woman was robbed of 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery at Enanallur near here on Tuesday.

Police said in the early hours of Tuesday two masked men broke into the house of Suresh (43), a teacher employed in a Kumbakonam school, through the rear entrance, broke open the chest, and gathered gold jewellery weighing more than 30 sovereigns, some silver utensils, and a little cash and were about to leave when their movement woke up Suresh’s mother Shantha.

The robbers threatened Shantha at knife point and robbed her of 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery. Although she resisted their assault, the elderly woman could only part with her belongings.

When the two left, Shantha raised an alarm that woke up Suresh and his wife Geetha who alerted neighbours and searched the criminals who escaped in the darkness.

Suresh filed a complaint with the Nachiyar Koil police who have registered a case and are investigating.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Pandi and other police officials visited the spot.
