March 25, 2011 02:40 am | Updated October 01, 2016 12:31 am IST - CHENNAI:

The simmering resentment among Congressmen regarding the selection of candidates for the Assembly elections surfaced on Thursday with a number of persons, said to be Youth Congress cadre, staging a protest in front of the Mylapore Tahsildar's office here where TNCC president K.V.Thangkabalu's wife filed her nomination for the Mylapore seat.

The choice of Jayanthi Thangkabalu triggered a controversy on Wednesday evening as soon as the announcement came. A group of persons burnt an effigy of Mr.Thangkabalu in front of his residence at Adayar.

This morning also a number of persons gathered in front of the Mylapore Tahsildar's office and tried to stage a similar protest. They were removed by the police.

Talking to mediapersons after his wife filed her nomination papers, Mr.Thangkabalu dismissed such protests as routine. In the afternoon, a group, whose leaders were said to have been ignored in selection, smashed window panes at Sathyamurthy Bhavan, the party headquarters.
