The first batch of 43 Indian fishermen, who were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy recently, arrived at the Karaikal Marg port on Saturday.

A total of 86 fishermen from Karaikal, Kasakudi, Karaikalmedu, Kottucherry and Kilinjalmedu as well as from Akkaraipettai and Tharangampadi in Nagapattinam district ventured into the sea from the Karaikal port on February 22 and 24 in two batches on 10 trawlers.

The Sri Lankan Navy arrested them while they were fishing south-east off Kodiyakkarai. The Sri Lankan government released all the 86 fishermen as a goodwill gesture following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the island nation.

The first batch of fishermen was brought to Karaikal on two Indian Coast Guard patrol vessels.
