A 20-year-old woman, who had tested positive for dengue, died at a private hospital on Monday. She had delivered of a still-born baby at the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH), Adukkamparai, on December 7.
Authorities of the Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital, Vellore, confirmed that Soniya, a resident of Pernambut, was tested positive for dengue.
A dengue serology test was done on her after she was brought in a “very sick” condition to the hospital on December 10. “She was very sick on arrival. She could not be revived despite our efforts,” an official said.
A family member said Soniya was nine months pregnant. “She had fever for about two days before delivery and we took her to a private hospital in Pernambut.
They said she had tested positive for dengue. We then took her to the Government Hospital at Pernambut and was referred to GVMCH.”
At GVMCH, Soniya delivered of a still-born baby on December 7. She was bleeding profusely and her family shifted her to CMC on December 10.
“Doctors informed us that her platelet count was low. We donated blood at the hospital. Despite transfusion, her condition did not improve. She died on Monday morning,” the family member said.
However, officials of the Health Department denied that she suffered from dengue and said the death could have been caused by post partum haemorrhage.
“This could be a case of maternal death. We will investigate into the cause of the intrauterine death (IUD). The fever might be associated with IUD,” Deva Parthasarathy, Deputy Director of Health Services, Tirupattur, said.
He said their team had visited the locality and found that there were no fever cases in the last one week.
