June 07, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 16, 2016 11:14 am IST - GURGAON:

After launching special trains for birthday celebrations and fun-filled activities for children over the weekends, the Rapid Metro has now launched “Poetry Express” for lovers of art and poetry.

Poetry session

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Rapid Metro’s Poetry Express embarked on a literary journey through the teeming city of Gurgaon on Sunday. Members of Poets’ Collective, a movement giving life to the unadulterated expression and pleasure of poetry, hopped onto the Rapid Metro here along with Youth for Heritage Foundation to conduct a poetry session on the moving train.

An entire coach of the Rapid Metro was reserved for the occasion and the central area of the coach was converted into a platform from where poets recited their words. Bedsheets were spread out on either side of the floor to accommodate the crowd of nearly 70 people. While entry into and exit from the coach was prevented, many curious commuters from other coaches kept peeping in and out.

Eclectic group

Of the 70 people present, 40-odd recited poems in various languages, including Hindi, English, Punjabi and Spanish. The audience and poets comprised mostly young people aged between 18-30 years. The eclectic group boasted included students, software engineers and even professors. Their session, that lasted for almost four hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., had poems on a wide range of topics including love, life and feelings.

A Rapid Metro spokesperson said Poetry Express is not a regular weekly affair but will ran as and when there are bookings. Poets’ Collective founder Saumya Kulshrestha said the forum members were thrilled with this unique opportunity.

Youth for Heritage Foundation president Vikramjit Singh Rooprai added that the foundation had been working to connect past with present and improve the future.

“This initiative of Poetry Express is a perfect example of linking historic traditions with modern day technology. Everyone is so engrossed in their daily chores and fight for survival, that they do not get chance to celebrate life.”

Previously, Rapid Metro Gurgaon had launched Joy Express.

The Discovery Kids Joy Express is another unique initiative and an experiential learning opportunity for children over the weekends. It is filled with interactive activities, which help children become aware of sustainable public transport.

Birthday on Wheels is yet another concept started by Rapid Metro. It has been widely praised by commuters. Many young commuters look forward to celebrating their special day with Rapid Metro by booking an entire train for a day to remember.
