Move to appoint CBI Special Director criticised

April 26, 2014 01:36 am | Updated May 21, 2016 01:23 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

After taking strong objection to the UPA government’s alleged move to select a Lokpal and appoint the next Army Chief, the BJP has criticised the government’s move to appoint a Special Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday questioned the government’s “uncalled for” and “hurried” move to go ahead with filling up the key post of CBI Special Director at a time when only three phases of polling were left. He was reacting to the government’s plan to convene a meeting of the Central Vigilance Commission on Monday to finalise the name for the post of CBI Special Director. “What is the hurry and rationale behind rushing through an important appointment like this in the country’s premier investigation agency,” Mr. Prasad, said wondering if the Congress was trying to cover up its alleged misdeeds.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which enjoys administrative control over the CBI, is learnt to have recommended the name of Prakash Mishra, presently Director-General of Police, Odisha, sources in the government said.

Mr. Mishra who belongs to the1977 batch of the Indian Police Service, has served in the CBI and in the National Investigation Agency . The DoPT move has also come under criticism by empanelled senior IPS officers who are from the 1978, 1979 and 1980 batches and fall under zone of consideration for appointment as CBI Special Director.
