Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has urged the Centre to incorporate Kathmandu as a designated route for the return journey of the former Kashmiri militants and their families who wanted to live a peaceful life back home.
The rehabilitation policy introduced with the approval of the Government of India in 2010 recognises only five routes — Indira Gandhi International Airport New Delhi (air), Wagah (bus), Attari (train), Chakan da Bagh Poonch and Uri (cross-LoC bus).
However, none of the ex-militants and their family members — whose number has crossed 1,000 — have returned through these routes as the Pakistan government would not permit any of them to take these regular routes for it could establish that the Kashmiri militants were being trained in the neighbouring country.
