Legislation to hand over the disputed land in Ayodhya to the Janmabhoomi Nyas for building a Ram temple as suggested by the sangh parivar has been ruled out by the Janata Dal(United) as a solution to the controversial issue.
JD(U) president Sharad Yadav said a settlement of the issue through a court verdict or a negotiated agreement between the parties to the dispute were the only two ways out of the problem. His stand sharply differed with that of the Bharatiya Janata Party, its alliance partner in the October-November Bihar Assembly poll.
Mr. Yadav was speaking to reporters when he inaugurated the party's new website here on Saturday. He said the site would allow the party to remain “in touch with the people round-the-clock” ahead of the Bihar election.
Mr. Yadav said the Ayodhya verdict, expected to be delivered on September 24, must be respected by all, and there should be no attempt to drum up public frenzy or incite communal passions. “People must oppose and confront whoever tries to create trouble and tension on this,” he said, when asked what his views were on the possibility of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Bajrang Dal and other allied organisations trying to create communal tension in the event of the verdict not favouring building of a temple at the site .
The JD(U) leadership has made it known that it hoped the BJP would check all elements that might be out to create tension on the Ayodhya issue. If it did not, the alliance in the Bihar poll could be hurt by a Muslim consolidation against the JD(U)-BJP partnership. It will could adversely affect the electoral prospects.
Mr. Yadav said the seat-sharing arrangement between the two would be finalised in the next few days.
