Yuhanon Mor Philexinos, former Bishop Emeritus of the Malabar diocese of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, passed away here on Wednesday morning. The Metropolitan, 74, died of age-related ailments at a private hospital here. His body was taken to the St.Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Cathedral at Pampady in Kottayam district.
Mor Philoxenos Yuhanon took his M.A. in Economics from S.V. University, Tirupati. In 1964, he was ordained deacon. The title ‘Mor Philoxenos’ was conferred on him at the St. Mary’s Cathedral at Meenangadi on September 12, 1985. He was instrumental in the overall development of the diocese for the two-and-a-half decades since his enthronement as the Metropolitan of Malabar diocese.
In August 2009, he sent a letter to the Patriarch requesting exemption from administrative duties after his health deteriorated. He was leading a retired life in Mar Ignatious Nagar near Meenangadi. The Metropolitan had served as the secretary, Holy Episcopal Synod; president, Martha Mariyam Vanitha Samajam; and patron, St. Paul’s Mission of India.
