The Chicago-based Water Environment Federation has recognised the findings of the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) here by selecting it for the WEF McKee Award for 2015 for evolving technology for groundwater protection, restoration and sustainable use. The institute will be honoured with the prestigious award for developing environmentally compatible filtration mechanisms for rainwater harvesting.
The award will be given away on September 29 in Chicago, a CPCRI release said. CPCRI Director P. Chowdappa said rainwater harvesting was the most sustainable way for tackling water scarcity. However, a hydraulically efficient, environmentally compatible and cost-effective filtration mechanism had not been there to enhance the quality of rainwater in its various forms.
In such a situation, the CPCRI had developed three filter devices — storm water horizontal filter, roof water vertical filter, and recharge dual flow filter — which received global acceptance, he said.
