The Nair Service Society (NSS) on Sunday took strong exception to the reference made by a section of the media accusing NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair of supporting corrupt elements.
In a statement here, Mr. Nair said such allegations were totally unfounded and aimed at misleading the people.
Regarding the bar licence bribery case, Mr. Nair said he had only clarified the proclaimed stand of the NSS on corruption. He said proper inquiry should be conducted into corruption charges levelled against any person.
However, the NSS stand that no person should be crucified until the corruption charges levelled against him were proved was not taken only in the case of Finance Minister K.M. Mani. The NSS had taken such a stand in all similar cases, he said.
Mr. Nair said that he had never convened a press conference to protect Mr. Mani as reported. Instead, he had only clarified the NSS stand while replying to reporters questions.
Mr. Nair said the NSS had never issued any statement in support of Congress leader P.J. Kurien in the Suryanelli case.
‘‘The stand adopted by the NSS in the case of Mr. Mani and Prof. Kurien might have acted in their favour. But, it was grossly improper to indict the NSS for telling the truth,’’ Mr. Nair said.
On the resignation of Kerala Congress(B) R. Balakrishna Pillai as chairman of the Forward Community Welfare Commission, Mr. Nair said that Mr. Pillai, as a prominent NSS leader, was in good terms with the organisation. Mr. Nair said he had also clarified to the media that the NSS had nothing to do with Mr. Pillai’s politics.
He said the issues between Mr. Pillai and the UDF were their internal matter, and hence it need not be linked with the NSS.
