One person was killed and three were seriously affected while cleaning a water tank at Pulikkuttissery near here on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Rajappan (70) of Mankizhayil House, Vallyad near Pulikkuttissery. His son Jayaraj (32) has been admitted to Kottayam Government Medical College in a serious condition. Their neighbours Saji of Valiattil House and son Saran (18) too complained of suffocation and uneasiness and are under observation.

According to the police, the four had entered the water tank with a capacity of 1,00,000 litres for cleaning it. They were pumping out the water when they complained of uneasiness. Rajappan soon fainted. Though he was taken to the hospital he was pronounced dead.

The tank belonged to Rajappan. The police said it could be carbon monoxide from the motor which had caused the death.
