Four persons were killed and as many injured when a trailer overturned and crashed on to an Innova car at Palachiramadu near Kottakkal on National Highway-17 on Saturday afternoon. The accident took place around 2.30 a.m. at a descending curve.
The dead were identified as Mohammed Parvis, Shamsir, 29, Shamsir, 26, and Faizal, 25. The car was on its way from Chokli, Mahe, to the Nedumbassery airport when the trailer hit it from behind.
Trailer driver flees
The trailer lost control and turned over, crushing the car under it. The trailer driver fled from the scene soon after the accident.
The passengers who were trapped under the trailer were pulled out by local residents, led by a trained trauma care group named Saviors. They rescue group swung into action by using the ropes provided by truck drivers that came by. Police personnel from Kalpakanchery and Kottakkal stations and the fire brigade from Tirur also joined the rescue efforts.
The trailer, which carried aluminium sheets weighing nearly 50 tonnes, was heading for Kochi from Mumbai.
The injured were initially admitted to Aster Mims Hospital, Kottakkal, from where they were shifted to Aster Mims Hospital, Kozhikode.
