March 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:56 am IST - BALLARI:

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) Directorate for Karnataka and Goa is contemplating setting up an NCC Naval unit at Koppal making use of the Tungabhadra flowing close by.

Air Commodore C. Rajeev, Deputy Director-General of NCC Directorate for Karnataka & Goa, told presspersons here on Friday that the proposal was still in nascent stage. The preliminary process of preparing a detailed proposal was under way and would be submitted to the State government soon for its approval. On getting the green signal, the proposal would be forwarded to the Union government for its final approval.

“All things being equal, we hope to establish the NCC Naval unit at Koppal, coming under NCC Group Ballari, by 2016,” he said.

According to him, the establishment of naval unit would enable imparting training various naval activities, disaster management and the like.

He also informed that a new NCC unit, with an intake of 3,500 cadets, would be set up in Chitradurga district.

Mr. Rajeev was here to chair over the two-day NCC Group Commanders’ conference that began on Friday. Commanders and senior officers from all the six NCC groups from Karnataka and Goa were attending it.

“The annual conference was to discuss issues related to training, enrolment, and increasing the presence of NCC in schools and colleges, especially in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. The conference will also discuss and chalk out plans to train the cadets in some of the ‘yoga asanas’ to be formed on International Yoga Day on June 21,” he said.
