Over two lakh voters in Jayanagar constituency will finally cast their votes on Monday. While the rest of the State went to polls on May 12, elections to Jayanagar constituency was countermanded after the death of incumbent MLA and BJP candidate B.N. Vijay Kumar.
The other constituency that went to polls later than the rest of the 224 constituencies was Rajarajeshwari Nagar, as voter IDs were found in an apartment in Jalahalli. Elections to the constituency were held on May 28 and the results were announced on May 31.
Jayanagar is the last of the constituencies to go to polls. There are 216 polling booths in seven wards in the constituency, among which five are pink booths.
The constituency is set for a tough contest between the BJP’s B.N. Prahlad, brother of the late Vijay Kumar, and the Congress’s Sowmya Reddy, daughter of Congress leader and former Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Independent candidate Ravi Krishna Reddy is also in the fray.
The constituency has been a BJP stronghold for the last two terms. In the 2013 elections, Vijay Kumar won by 12,312 votes defeating Congress candidate M.C. Venugopal. Prior to that, Mr. Ramalinga Reddy won four times consecutively.
