Nine of the top 10 students in the engineering stream in the Undergraduate Entrance Test (UGET) conducted by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) are from Karnataka.
However, in the medical and dental stream, only three of the top 10 candidates are from the State.
The results for the UGET were announced on Wednesday.
Eligible for counsellingIn the engineering stream, all 43,179 candidates who appeared for the exams have become eligible to participate in the counselling process.
49.46 p.c. not eligibleHowever, in the medical and dental stream, as many as 23,291 students of 47,085 students have not qualified for counselling. This amounts to 49.46 per cent.
To qualify for counselling for medical and dental streams, students are expected to score 50 per cent in Physics, Chemistry and Biology papers. They are also expected to score 50 per cent marks in the English paper.
To a question on the number of students who were not able to secure 50 per cent in the English paper, COMEDK officials said the details had not yet been analysed.
However, there is no English paper for engineering seat aspirants. In addition, there is no minimum marks requirement in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. As a result of this, all candidates are eligible for counselling.
A.S. Srikanth, chief executive of COMEDK, said: “The results this year are better compared to last year, indicating that the competition was tougher this year.”
In a dilemmaMeanwhile, many of the toppers were still in a dilemma about which courses and colleges to join. Many of the Karnataka toppers in the medical and dental stream, however, said that they would prefer a government quota seat as it was less expensive.
Bangalore girl Girija Agarwal, who topped the medical and dental stream, was also the topper in the Common Entrance Test. Proud after obtaining a total of 178 out of 180 in PCB, she said: “I have also written other competitive exams such as AIPMT and IIT JEE. I want to pursue MBBS and my preferred colleges at the moment are Bangalore Medical Institute and Research Centre and Kasturba Medical College.”
In the engineering stream, the first rank was bagged by Dinesh Ram Kumar, a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Malleswaram. He said that staying abreast of his school curriculum helped him ace the competitive exams. Hoping to bag a seat at IIT Madras, Dinesh said that his other preferences included BITS-Pilani, NIT and RVCE.
